My Surreal, Icky, Yucky Dream Last Night
I dreamt this last night, this exact moment. And that’s how I looked in my dream too. Which thankfully, I looked nothing like in real life. When I woke up, I had a brief moment of confusion, because I was torn between wanting to check to mirror to see if I was really looked like that, and running to the bathroom to brush my teeth.
I really ought to start keeping a dream journal. My...

Karakuri
I spent the morning reading about Karakuri — Japanese automatons made using pulleys, wheels, and wooden gears from the Edo period. Elegant, impressive, amazing machines. This beautifully-shot video by Matthew Allard features one of the few remaining craftsmen that’s keeping this tradition alive.

Milk Tea Level Up!
Take your milk tea addiction to the next level with this instant milk tea from…Taiwan? China? One of those. Anyway, you just add hot water to brew the milk tea powder, add ice to your liking, and it’s ready to drink! Comes with pearls too! Now you won’t have to fall in line at Moonleaf Tea, or Serenitea, or Infinitea, or Cha Time…or…or…what else? One of those.

The Information Sage →
Information design students (and practitioners) would do well to read and find out more about Edward Tufte. Start with this well-painted profile from The Washington Monthly.
Good Taste Gets In Your Way
“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your...

Lois Lane: Girl Reporter
File this under “Books I Wish Existed”:
deantrippe:
Here are some notes and images from Lois Lane: Girl Reporter, a pitch for a series of illustrated young adult novels I worked on a few years ago for DC Comics. Story by me, with considerable brainstorming help from my pal John Campbell, and art by Project: Rooftop fan favorite Daniel Krall.
My wonderful editor, Chris Cerasi,...

On Style
Made aware of this by Fran Alvarez, a former student of mine who’s also a really good artist and designer. From the introduction to Stylepedia: A Guide to Design Mannerisms, Quirks, and Conceits:
“The word ‘style’ has resonance beyond commonly accepted prejudices and, there, should not be seen as mere superfluity. In graphic design, style is sometimes the look, but more...
Smile - Praying for Japan Through Art
globalartkatipunan:
Japanese artist Takehiko Inoue offers a series of art pieces as a visual prayer for those affected by the recent earthquake / tsunami in Japan. Our hearts also go out to all, and pray for their safety and recovery.
Takehiko Inoue is best known as the creator of the popular manga series Slam Dunk.
Sometimes the situation is only a problem because it is looked at in a certain...

2011 Starts Here
To help start you off on your first day of the year, here’s a post from Seth Godin on the first rule of doing work that matters.
“Art is hard. Selling is hard. Writing is hard. Making a difference is hard.
When you’re doing hard work, getting rejected, failing, working it out—this is a dumb time to make a situational decision about whether it’s time for a nap or a...

And Now, A Holiday Message From Me
Though my greetings be a day or two late,It won’t stop my want to go and celebrate,And share in the joy and love of the season,Of which is Christmas’ true heartfelt reason. (And if my poor rhyming has dampened your mood,Then let me just sit down and shut up—let’s just feast on the food!) Happy holidays, everyone!

A Holiday Message from Ricky Gervais →
Ricky Gervais wrote a holiday piece for the Wall Street Journal, and while I don’t particularly share his atheist views, they nevertheless are thought-provoking, and well-reasoned (and quite hilarious). I especially like his closing arguments:
“Do unto others…” is a good rule of thumb. I live by that. Forgiveness is probably the greatest virtue there is. But that’s exactly what it is -‐ a...

Komiksabado Comics Workshop
After 3 years of teaching comics production classes in Ateneo, and making comics for longer than that, I’m now opening a weekend workshop on comics production so I can share what I’ve learned to more people (and, of course, learn from them as well, in the process).
KOMIKSABADO is a comprehensive workshop on comics production that aims to cover the full range of tasks involved in...
Friends Can Be Leeches Part Two
Ultimately, we can only hope that the friends we choose turn out to be like Pokemon and, over time, evolve.
Friends Can Be Leeches
Fortunately, we can choose our friends. Unfortunately, they also can choose us.
Xie xie!
87 followers and I didn’t notice or get to thank you because I still don’t know how Tumblr works and I’m really only pretending to be tech-savvy when really all I am is very impatient when it comes to technology and so can’t figure anything out but anyway having said that thank you so much I suppose for following my pa-tumbling-tumbling online, full-stop.

Lost is a Prerequisite for Being Found
We all are lost, one way or another, until we realize that space is relative. No position is fixed or absolute. In the vastness of the universe, we can only find our place in the context of other people, and in doing so, realizing that for all our occasional unbearable loneliness, we are never truly alone.
